Below are photos featuring green aspects of this home. Click on the images to see the slideshow.
  • This north view of the home shows how it nestles with the mature trees on this 2 acre site. Careful planning preserved these trees and utilized existing vegetation to assist with passive solar design.
  • To minimize disturbance of existing mature trees, the site of an old double wide was reused. Using chalk lines the home was positioned to maximize solar gain before the foundation work began.
  • Installing the 2" rigid insulation inside foundation's stem wall and extends 4' under the slab. Gravel is also being spread as the first step in creating a Passive Radon Mitigation System.
  • Advanced framing strategies were used to minimize lumber and maximize insulation. With blown in fiberglass in the wall and rigid foam outside the wall, the insulation value is R-31.
  • Timber Trusses from New Mexico frame the "summer" porch and local timbers are used for the framing of the west "portal" and "winter" porch as well.
  • Proper design and construction reduces waste. This is the small amount of scrap lumber and OSB that was delivered to "Wood You Recycle". They will recycle the scrap lumber into pellet stove pellets.
  • Finished home showing passive solar south side of home. There is a black sliver on the garage roof that barely shows the 14 panel 2.3Kw photovoltaic system
  • This is the home's tankless condensing water heater. The home also has a condensing furnace. More than 94% efficienct, their water vapor exhaust condenses into water and very little heat is lost.
  • Besides great insulation and mechanical ventilation for comfort and indoor air quality, natural ventilation is provided. This high dormer window helps vent heat during the cool summer nights.
  • The outdoor fireplace keeps smoke outside the envelope. This prevents the fireplace from compromising the home's indoor air quality.
