Sustainable Features:

  • Landscape/Site - Infill site; minimized site disturbance during construction; low-water use landscaping with minimal new plantings; existing landscape, including field visited by migrating birds, protected during construction.
  • Water Efficiency - Existing pond and hot tub eliminated to reduce water use; rain catchment system is in development; drip irrigation with timer; low-flow plumbing fixtures and short plumbing runs; DHW heated by source heat pump with recirculating pump controlled by thermostat and timer.
  • Energy Efficiency - Home has 3 geothermal wells for heating/cooling and 2 geothermal wells for DHW; the ground source heat pump has a COP ranging from 3.5 to 3.9 for heating and an EER of 15.4 to 20.8 for cooling; Warmboard™ radiant heating on second level; optimal solar orientation, overhangs/porches, and a renovated sun space on the south side; ENERGY STAR® applicances, including low voltage fridge; lighting includes LED recessed cans, programmable timers, dimmers, and CFLs.
  • Materials/Resource Efficiency - Materials from existing home, including timber, decking, adobes, lumber, bricks and miscellaneous other items, recycled or reused on site; local materials include timbers from the Chama area, Kinney bricks, adobes, American Clay™ plaster; local craftsman fabricated stone fireplaces; US made lighting fixtures; salvaged/recycled  material includes TJI’s, beams/decking, lumber, adobe; corn husk sandblasting for exposed reused wood; Zodiaq™ countertops.
  • Indoor Environmental Quality - Low-VOC Harmony™ paints; American Clay™ walls; detached garage; sealed ducts; whole house ventilation with HRV system; natural lighting; walnut veneer floor at second level finished with euKula™ hard wax oil.
  • Innovation in Design/Features - With ground source heat pump and 6 kW PV system, most of the energy used by this home is renewable. Many local and sustainably harvested materials were used, extensive reuse/recycling of adobe walls and other materials, and local Sierra Pacific™ windows.
