Sustainable Features:
- Landscape/Site - Built in an apple orchard, preservation and continuation of property’s agricultural heritage; acequia water enclosed in underground piping to prevent evaporative loss; programmable irrigation system to efficiently deliver water to orchard; ADA accessible herb and vegetable gardens planned.
- Water Efficiency - Underground storage tanks collect rainwater roof runoff on main structure and garage; 2 of 3 tanks are recycled stock tanks; retained water and surface water routed to native vegetation with drip irrigation; snow stops installed on pitched roof to capture melted snow.
- Energy Efficiency - Passive cooling and lighting via clerestory cooling tower; highly insulated windows, R-50 ceilings, adobe construction with rigid foam on exterior; intensive air gap insulation and insulated foundation; 96% efficient boiler; 3kW PV to be installed.
- Materials/Resource Efficiency - Local materials include site-produced adobes, vigas and roughsawn lumber from northern New Mexico and Native American sources, recycled water tanks, American Clay™ plaster, Sierra Pacific windows; no-VOC paints or stains; no-acid concrete floor stain.
- Indoor Environmental Quality - American Clay™ plaster; eco-stained concrete floors; Designed for fresh air flow and connection to outdoors; detached garage to isolate fumes.
- Innovation in Design/Features - This home has been designed to be multigenerational, with ADA accessible doorways, showers, access ramps, and paths. Emphasis was given to the integration of the agricultural history of the land and the Historic Las Placitas Village.
