Senator Bingaman Addresses Chapter and Guests

October 11, 2007 Special Event a Huge Success!

Senator Jeff Bingaman addressed the USGBC NM Chapter members and special quests on October 11, 2007 at the MCM Elegante in Albuquerque, NM. He spoke on upcoming federal legislation related to energy efficiency, renewable energy, and green building.

There were 173 chapter members and guests at one of the biggest events the NM chapter has hosted. Also addressing the attendees were the Chapter President, James Wernicke, Past President Howard Kaplan and Secretary Julie Walleisa. Karen Cook, one of the founding members of the chapter, introduced Senator Bingaman.

Special thanks to Robert Mallory, Chairperson of the Membership Committee for the Chapter, for all of his perseverance and energy in arranging this opportunity for the chapter.

Senator Jeff Bingaman who is the Chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, is currently serving his fifth term in the United States Senate. Senator Bingaman is the Chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, a member of the Finance Committee, and Chairman of the Subcommittee on Energy, Natural Resources, and Infrastructure. He co-authored the Energy Policy Act of 2005, and has sponsored or authored numerous pieces of legislation relating to energy, natural resources, and environmental issues.

As chair of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Senator Bingaman was instrumental in shaping the Clean Energy Act of 2007, which intends to reduce U.S. oil consumption and promote renewable sources of energy. The senator also recently introduced the Low Carbon Economy Act, intended to significantly reduce carbon emissions.
